Congratulations Michelle Strong, 8th Grader, and Dona Cheney Earth Science Teacher
Congratulations need to go out to Michelle Strong, 8th grader, and Dona Cheney. Michelle won the Discovery Education and 3M Corporation Science Competition for the state of Nevada. Michelle wanted to see if ceramic roofing tiles painted white would reduce the amount of heat conducted during our hot summer months. Michelle took two roofing tiles, one untreated and one painted white, placed them in pickle jars with thermometers, and recorded the temperature differences. Michelle found the white tile conducted less heat than the untreated tile, and the pickle jar stayed on average 4 degrees cooler than the pickle jar with the untreated tile. Hopefully Michelle will find a patent for this tile and benefit from her project.
